From the Desk of Pastor Tom

We saw some of the most powerful, some of the most Gospel filled truths of our entire study in Colossians, and also some of the most culturally controversial teaching in all of the Bible. Why are these verses so controversial? Our pride, our own sinfulness, the sins of humanity and more specifically sinful leaders.
Colossians 2:1-10 warns us against rejecting or discarding these verses. 2:10 shows that Christ is the ultimate authority that we all submit to. I’ve said this many times before, but can I say it one more time? God’s truth is eternally and infinitely deeper and better than any human tradition. Christ triumphs over the empty philosophies of this world.
But Christ must be actively working in you for this to come about. I encourage you to begin reading back through the book of Colossians and perhaps go back to listen to some of our previous messages. These marriage truths do not stand in isolation. In fact, what we find here is patently unnatural and consistently impossible apart from the working of God within. These verses are placed at this point in Colossians on purpose. Everything that has come before contributes to these truths. Listen to what these other authors have to say about this…
“How a husband and wife build their marriage day-by-day and year-by-year is fundamentally shaped by their theology. It governs how you think, what you say, and how you act. Your theology governs your entire life. And it determines how you live in your marriage.”
“The most foundational thing to see from the Bible about marriage is that it is God’s doing. And the ultimate thing to see from the Bible about marriage is that it is for God’s glory. Those are the two points I have to make. Most foundationally, marriage is the doing of God. And ultimately, marriage is the display of God. ”
“Learning to love involves more than trying hard to follow Jesus’ example. It involves living in an intimate relationship with him, trusting him, and asking him to give us the ability to love. ”
So, if you desire to have a good marriage, one that works God’s way we must start with God’s Word. Pray and ask for God’s help this week that you and your spouse can imitate and model Christ in your marriage relationship.
