Discussion Questions for All Leaves, No Faith

📖 Biblical Insight

1. The King They Expected — Mark 11:1–11

  • What did the crowds appear to believe about Jesus as He entered Jerusalem?
  • How does Jesus’ arrival in Jerusalem prepare for what He will accomplish through the cross?

2. Leaves Without Fruit — Mark 11:12–21

  • Why does Mark place the story of the fig tree around Jesus’ cleansing of the temple?
  • What connection is there between the tree with leaves but no fruit and the activities in the temple?

3. Faith, Prayer, and Forgiveness — Mark 11:22–25

  • What does Jesus mean when He says, “Have faith in God”?
  • How does prayer demonstrate genuine dependence upon God rather than confidence in ourselves?
  • Why is it important Jesus directs faith toward God, rather than religion, our church, or our abilities?
  • Why does Jesus connect prayer with forgiveness in this passage?

🔨 Practical Application

1. Leaves or Fruit?

  • What are some examples of “leaves” in the Christian life—things that may look spiritual but don’t necessarily reflect genuine faith?
  • What kinds of spiritual fruit should naturally grow from a genuine relationship with Jesus?
  • How can we regularly evaluate whether our activity for God is flowing from a relationship with God?

2. Faith That Depends on God

  • What is the difference between faith God can do something and actually trusting with the outcome?
  • What would it look like for your prayer life to demonstrate greater dependence on God this week?

3. A Church That Bears Fruit

  • How does Mark 11 challenge the way we evaluate a church’s success?
  • What might it look like for our church to produce fruit rather than simply produce activity?
  • How can we grow a culture of genuine faith, prayer, evangelism, and spiritual growth?

🪞 Personal Reflection

1. What Does Jesus See?

  • If Jesus were to “inspect” your life today, what would He see?
  • Does your outward Christian life look healthier than your inward relationship with God actually is?
  • What spiritual fruit do you see God producing in your life? Where does he desire fruit to grow in you?

3. What Needs to Change?

  • Is there an area of your Christian life where you are producing a lot of “leaves” but little fruit?
  • What activity, habit, attitude, or priority might God be calling you to surrender?
  • Is there someone you need to forgive as you seek God in prayer?
  • What is one specific step you can take this week toward a deeper, more genuine faith in God?
