John 16 — He Says It Before Calvary
Jesus ends the whole upper-room conversation with a sentence we quote all the time: “In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” Look at when he says it. He hasn’t been arrested. He hasn’t been beaten or nailed to anything. And the verb is past tense — in Greek, nenikēka, a perfect: “I have conquered, and it stands conquered.” He is so certain of the cross that he talks about it like it is already behind him. Hours later, from the cross, he says “It is finished” — the same perfect tense. Chapter 16 announces the verdict; chapter 19 signs it. And notice he doesn’t soften the first half either: not “you might have trouble.” Will. He guarantees the tribulation in the same breath he guarantees the victory. “Take heart” isn’t a suggestion; it’s a command grounded in his finished work, not your circumstances. The battle was settled before it was ever fought.
