Psalm 23 may be the best-known psalm. At least in the US, you can walk up to people and they will have heard some portion of the psalm before. Perhaps they know that God is our shepherd, or they’ve heard the line about walking through the ‘valley of the shadow of death’. Many people, Christian or not, will have this psalm read at a funeral because of the great comfort that they feel it will give. Do you have any idea why so many people know this short 6 verse section in the Bible? Maybe this short 6 verse picture of our loving God is just too encouraging to miss! It gives us such an incredible painting of who God is and what he does that even the unsaved wish that they had a relationship with Him! Look at it with me…
The Lord is identified as THE loving shepherd and David rejoices in the fact that he will not need to ‘want’ anything. God, the shepherd, is there to Guide, Protect, Feed, Nurture, Heal, Comfort, and completely take care of! We start getting a better idea of this Shepherd as the Psalm continues… He takes His sheep to the perfect field to graze, it is green and quiet enough to rest peacefully with calm water to drink. He clearly shows us where to go and protects us when we feel threatened or depressed. In fact, not only does he protect us, but Ps 23:5 shares that God will give us a feast to enjoy, while our enemies can only fume. God’s sheep are blessed beyond imagination (“my cup runneth over”) and are guaranteed this treatment for their entire lives.
