Discussion Questions for The Tragedy of Sin

📖 Biblical Insight Questions

1. The Beginning of Sin (Genesis 3:1–6)

  • Why is questioning God’s wisdom and goodness at the heart of temptation?
  • What does this passage teach about the nature of sin?
  • Why did God create humanity with the ability to choose obedience or rebellion?
  • How do we continue to repeat the same pattern today?

3. The Consequences of Sin (Genesis 3–4; Romans 1)

  • What are some of the consequences of sin described in these passages?
  • How does sin affect our relationship with God, others, and ourselves?
  • Why does sin lead to greater brokenness rather than the freedom it promises?

🔨 Practical Application Questions

1. Understanding the Human Condition

  • How does our culture explain humanity’s problems apart from God?
  • Where do those explanations fall short?
  • How does God balance personal responsibility with the reality of suffering and hardship?

2. The Danger of Self-Reliance

  • What are some modern ways people say, “I’ll do it my way”?
  • Why is self-rule so appealing?
  • What consequences have you seen when people reject God’s wisdom?
  • Why is it easier to blame circumstances, upbringing, culture, or other people for problems?
  • Why is acknowledging our own sin an important step toward growth?

4. Finding Real Change

  • Why can’t education, politics, or self-improvement fully solve humanity’s deepest problem?

🪞 Personal Reflection Questions

1. Your View of Yourself

  • Do you tend to think too highly of yourself, too poorly of yourself, or both at different times?
  • How does the Bible’s description of humanity challenge your self-perception?
  • How do we honestly acknowledge both dignity as God’s creation and our need as a sinner?

2. The Reality of Sin

  • Are there areas of your life where you are tempted to say, “I know better than God”?

How should you respond?

When you look at your struggles, how often do you consider the role of sin—either your own or the brokenness of the world?

Are there patterns of thinking, behavior, or attitudes that God may be exposing in your life?
