Jesus tells a room full of frightened men, “In my Father’s house are many rooms… I go to prepare a place for you” (14:2). Twenty verses later he says something that sounds like a different subject: “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him” (14:23). Those two phrases — “many rooms” and “make our home” — are the same word in Greek. Monē. A dwelling place, a staying place. And it shows up only twice in the entire New Testament, both times right here, twenty verses apart. That’s not coincidence; that’s John framing the room. So watch what Jesus does. He goes away to prepare a permanent place for us with the Father — and then, in the same conversation, he says the Father and I will come and make our permanent place in you, starting now. The King James “mansions” sent English readers looking for real estate; the word is about permanence, not square footage. It’s the noun behind “abide,” the verb that takes over the very next chapter. You’re not just waiting on a room. He’s already moved in.
