Acts 5: Same Scenes, New Hands
Read Acts 5:12-16 and see if it sounds familiar. Sick people carried out into the streets on cots and mats. Crowds coming in from the towns around Jerusalem. People troubled by unclean spirits. “And they were all healed.” That could have come straight out of Luke’s Gospel, and that’s on purpose. In Luke 6 the crowds came from everywhere to touch Jesus, “for power came out from him and healed them all.” Now they’re hoping for Peter’s shadow. Even the place is the same: Solomon’s Portico, where Jesus walked in John 10. So what do we make of it? The first verse of Acts says Luke’s Gospel was about “all that Jesus began to do and teach.” Acts is Jesus still doing it. Same Lord, same works, new hands. And Peter won’t take the credit: “Why do you stare at us, as though by our own power...?” A few chapters later he says it plainly: “Jesus Christ heals you.”
