Joel 2: Even the Servants

Joel 2:28-29: “I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions. Even on the male and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit.” In the Old Testament the Spirit came on a few people. Prophets, kings, judges. Mostly older men with titles. Moses wished it were different: “Would that all the LORD’s people were prophets, that the LORD would put his Spirit on them!” (Numbers 11:29). Joel says the day is coming when the Spirit lands on the slave girl the same as the prophet. Then on Pentecost Peter stands up in Jerusalem and says, “this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel.” And he tells us who poured it out: Jesus, “exalted at the right hand of God” (Acts 2:33). If you belong to Jesus, you’re not waiting on a second tier of the Spirit. You’re living in Joel 2:28.
